Teachers now have a new resource to directly connect their students with peers in more than 100 countries to discuss and explore hot-button social issues. With headlines ranging from the death of Osama bin Laden to the aftermath of Japan’s tsunami, and the floods in the southern states, students are now able to share their opinions and personal experiences with new-found classmates around the world.

Through a new initiative, called myWorld TakingITGlobal for Educators (myWorld TIGed), from the education and technology company, Pearson, and the global education network, TakingITGlobal (TIG), educators have immediate access to digitally driven content that makes global collaboration a reality for America’s middle schoolers with the click of a mouse.

The myWorld TIGed project makes it easy to include global perspectives in the classroom by providing a free online community along with a collection of resources for schools implementing Pearson’s middle grades social studies curriculums, myWorldGeography and myWorldHistory.

“Globally-minded educators want to empower their students to think and act as world citizens, so they are prepared to compete in our knowledge-based economy. myWorld TakingITGlobal for Educators provides a quick, easy, and secure opportunity for this kind of connectivity that encourages awareness of different cultures and peoples,” said Pearson’s Senior Vice President Lynda Cloud.

Cloud added, “It’s not enough to say it’s important for today’s tweens and teens to understand other cultures. We need to ensure they have a protected environment through which they can learn first-hand how to think beyond our country’s borders.”

Michael Furdyk, TakingITGlobal’s Co-founder explains, “myWorld TIGed’s safe, controlled online platform helps students expand their global consciousness by connecting with their peers around the world. Through a customized version of our award-winning online educational platform, we’re deepening engagement in the myWorldGeography and myWorld History programs.”

For teachers, the myWorld TIGed platform offers an online learning community, a variety of educational resources, and a suite of digital tools designed to deepen engagement in the myWorld programs. Participating teachers can access educational interactive games, blogs, maps, image galleries, discussion boards, internet safety resources, teacher training tutorials, and case studies of best practices.

With myWorld TIGed, teachers can monitor student postings and share student work with parents, school administrators, and other myWorld TIGed members.
