Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, last night presented nine publications with Utne Independent Press Awards for outstanding journalism in 2010. The winners were announced at a ceremony during the MPA’s Independent Magazine Advisory Group (IMAG) conference at the W San Francisco Hotel.

Mother Jones won the night’s highest honor, the General Excellence award. Utne Reader’s editors cited Mother Jones’ ability to cover the big stories and hit them hard. In 2010 the 35-year-old bimonthly covered the BP cover-up, the world’s population crisis, Big Pharma, the United States’ “age of treason,” and the attack on the middle class.

Utne Reader Editor in Chief David Schimke says, “This periodical nails it all, from well-chosen feature topics to deft editing to seamless design.”

Other winners include:
Best Arts Coverage — Wax Poetics
Best Body/Spirit Coverage — Tikkun
Best Environmental Coverage — Audubon
Best International Coverage — The Wilson Quarterly
Best Political Coverage — The Nation
Best Science/Technology Coverage — Technology Review
Best Social/Cultural Coverage — Bitch
Best Writing — The American Scholar

The Utne Independent Press Awards recognize the excellence and vitality of alternative and independent publishing. Utne Reader’s editors select nominee publications through an extensive reading process and yearlong examination, rather than via a competition with entry forms and fees. In this way, the magazine honors the efforts of small, sometimes unnoticed publications that provide innovative, thought-provoking perspectives often ignored or overlooked by mass media.

The awards were presented at a dinner attended by publishers and editors from the independent press. A number of winners and nominees were present, including The American Scholar, Bitch, Mother Jones, The Nation, Technology Review, Tikkun and Wax Poetics.
