Parc at Duluth resident and WWII airman Harry Sanger relived his airborne dream last week as he flew in an open-air cockpit replica biplane out of Atlanta’s Dekalb-Peachtree Airport. Mr. Sanger climbed to 2,000 feet as his friends and fellow residents of the Gwinnett-area retirement community looked on from the 57th Fighter Group Restaurant patio. The flight took him to nearby Stone Mountain Park and back.
An Air Force navigator and first lieutenant, Mr. Sanger survived 35 missions on a B-17 in the European Theater. Afterwards the military shipped him to California for pilot training where he spent time doing aerobatics in a Stearman biplane.
Parc at Duluth general manager Jan Robbs received a discount email for biplane flights at Dekalb-Peachtree Airport and remembered that Mr. Sanger dreamed of one day flying again. Robbs spoke of Mr. Sanger with the highest regard stating, “He’s a true patriot.”
“I was just enjoying it,” Mr. Sanger said. “You could see fine (despite patchy clouds) ... the side of Stone Mountain from the air really is something.”
