Des Moines, IA (PRWEB) May 23, 2011
Pearson, the world’s leading learning company, today announced that Iowa has selected EQUELLA, Pearson’s award-winning digital repository, to be the state’s repository for K12 online learning content. Iowa’s nine Area Education Agencies, in conjunction with the Community School Districts of Council Bluffs, Davenport, Sioux City, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and Iowa City, are creating the statewide repository, which will make online content available for schools to use for free or at substantially discounted prices. The digital repository is expected to launch by summer 2011.
Iowa’s EQUELLA repository, known as reSOURCE IOWA, will help educators to access, develop, enhance and share high quality digital learning content and serve as an important resource as the state builds its capacity to deliver digital curriculum to meet the needs of today’s learners. The repository will support online education in collaboration with Iowa Learning Online, an initiative of the Iowa Department of Education designed to help local schools expand student learning opportunities through online education.
“Iowa’s goal in creating a digital repository is to provide equity and diversity of curriculum for all of our students statewide—rural and urban,” said Nancy Movall, ARRA Ed Tech Grant Specialist and Project Manager. “Through EQUELLA, we will be able to provide our teachers and students with access to content, be it courses, units, lessons, activities or resources, and weave them together for a powerful learning experience so that all of our students benefit from engaging digital content.”
EQUELLA provides one central solution to meet an institution’s learning, research, media and library content needs. Educators, instructional designers and academic technologists can easily search in one location for all of their learning content—video, custom eBooks, presentations, lecture captures and more—all tagged by metadata such as learning outcomes, grade level and relevant keywords. EQUELLA places no restriction on the content type or file size, and all content is protected using the repository’s permissions, digital rights management and copyright functionality. Educators can also easily contribute their own materials or reuse content from shared repositories around the world.
“With EQUELLA, Iowa educators can easily find and incorporate the best available content statewide into their teaching activities, giving their students more opportunities to learn diverse topics and ensure they are better prepared to take the next step into higher education and the 21st Century workplace,” said Matt Leavy, CEO of Pearson eCollege.
