By partnering with a company like Course Hero that is committed to improving education abroad, we’ll be able to have an even bigger and broader impact in The Gambia by making education more accessible and affordable for thousands of students.
Sunnyvale, CA (PRWEB) May 24, 2011
Course Hero, an open learning environment connecting students and teachers around the world, today announced that it has selected the Books For Africa project "1 Million Books for Gambia" as the primary recipient for the thousands of books that the Course Hero Knowledge Drive is donating to children in Africa. The company is partnering with college students across the U.S. and Hand in Health, a non-profit organization that strives to provide education for students throughout The Gambia, to make education more accessible and affordable in Africa.
On the heels of completing the initial phase of the “1 Million Books for Gambia” project, which helped establish the first public medical library in all of The Gambia -- The Sulaymn Junkung Medical Library -- Hand in Health is embarking on the next phase of the project with the help of Course Hero. The two organizations will work together to increase the number of educational resources for doctors and other health educators, while also providing books to many other local schools, hospitals and libraries.
“Until now, we’ve focused on providing educational materials to medical professionals and students,” said Megan Meyer, director and founder of Hand in Health, “By partnering with a company like Course Hero that is committed to improving education abroad, we’ll be able to have an even bigger and broader impact in The Gambia by making education more accessible and affordable for thousands of students across the country.”
As Hand in Health works with organizations in The Gambia, Course Hero is rallying college students at more than 20 universities in the U.S. to help donate books to The Gambia. As students share study materials through Course Hero’s collaborative learning environment, the company donates one book on behalf of the student. Through the Course Hero Knowledge Drive program, students have already donated nearly 8000 books to Africa with the goal of donating 100,000 books by year end.
“In countries like The Gambia that lack the resources to provide quality education and materials, the Course Hero Knowledge Drive will play a key role in getting books in the hands of those that need it most,” said Andrew Grauer, CEO of Course Hero. “Course Hero believes in making education accessible to avid learners around the world, and we are proud that together with Hands in Health and Books for Africa, we’re helping to lower the illiteracy rate in The Gambia.”
