Open Concept Gallery, West Michigan’s premier gallery space featuring 21st Century Modern art and artists, announced today it will initiate funding and installation requirements for bringing Ugo Rondinone’s work, ‘Big Sky Mind’ to their Grand Rapids location.

"Rondinone’s work embodies the kind of art that our institution strives to represent. Additionally, by displaying the work on the side of our gallery, the work will accomplish our mission of infusing contemporary art into the public sphere. It is our greatest hope that Big Mind Sky will work to change cultural beliefs leading to increased public support for equality, affirmation and inclusion of Western Michigan’s diverse communities.

The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Presenhuber Gallery located in Zurich, Switzerland. The sculpture was displayed the previous year at Art Basel, the world’s premier international art show for modern and contemporary works. Art Basel features nearly 300 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa and more than 2,500 artists ranging from the great masters of Modern art to the latest generation of emerging stars. The exhibition includes the highest-quality paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, and video works, instilling no wonder as it is considered the “Olympics” of the art world.

Ugo Rondinone was born in Switzerland in 1964. His work was included in the 2004 Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, and in the past several years he has had one-person museum exhibitions at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Kunsthalle, Vienna; the Kunstverein, Stuttgart; the Galleria Civica, Modena; the Museum for Contemporary Art, Sydney; and Le Consortium in Dijon; among others. In September of 2007, “The Third Mind”, a large exhibition curated by Ugo Rondinone, opened at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

Open Concept Gallery began operations in 2006 as a non-profit institution dedicated to increasing the understanding of 21st century art and today’s important social issues. The nonprofit gallery organizes a wide range of educational programs for audiences of all ages, in conjunction with the contemporary art exhibits it hosts. It serves as a platform that allows the community to collectively consider different perspectives, raise new questions and discover new approaches to the challenges of our times.

The gallery is located at 50 Louis St. NW, Grand Rapids, MI. Gallery hours are currently by appointment and can be arranged by calling the gallery at 616 540 3860.
