Amy Whidburn, Trading Director for Garden & Seasonal at Homebase said: “We are delighted that this wonderful garden and our hardworking team have been rewarded with a Silver Gilt medal. We are hugely grateful to Tom for creating the garden with us and for showcasing the Homebase plants in such a beautiful setting. We are very excited about our new in-store Chelsea Collection - a special plant collection inspired by the garden, which comes with an easy to follow planting plan so that people can have a go at recreating the look.”
Accepting the medal, Hoblyn, said: “This is my most ambitious show garden to date and the design inspiration was so personal to me, so I am immensely proud to receive this award. I would like to thank Homebase for their support during the design and build of the garden.”
The Homebase Cornish Memories Garden attracted crowds of visitors on Monday with a series of performances chosen to complement the vintage Cornish feel. To open the garden a beautiful mermaid, inspired by the maidens of Cornish myths and legends, basked in the natural swimming pool entrancing visitors. Later Cornish band The Frootful Art Ensemble added to the retro ambiance by playing a set of 60s soul-inspired songs, while cream tea was served courtesy of the Tregothnan tea estate. The garden’s entertainment concluded with a live performance of a specially composed Cornish anthem from electric violin due FUSE.
This was Tom’s fourth garden for RHS Chelsea, having received a gold on his debut in 2008, silver in 2009 and silver gilt last year with the Foreign & Colonial Investments’ Garden supported by Homebase. He has also won a gold medal at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show where he worked with Homebase for the first time.
Conjuring up memories of childhood exploration of Cornwall’s rugged landscape and dramatic coastlines, Tom drew on his most inspiring places to create this garden. A garden pavilion was designed to mimic the almost unfeasible structures of the imposing Cheesewrings on Bodmin moor; planting is reminiscent of the famous gardens at Trebah and Trewithen, and rills of water evoke the spidery patterns etched in the wet sand of the beaches. Coastal rock pools were the perfect inspiration for a natural swimming pool, the largest of its kind to be seen at Chelsea, bringing that all-important feeling of health and wellbeing into the heart of the garden.
Gardeners will be able to recreate the magic of Chelsea at home this year using plant varieties inspired by Homebase’s show garden. The Chelsea Collection is available in stores now and features plants that reflect the informal expanses of Cornish gardens such as easy to grow grasses, Rhododendron shrubs and foxgloves. All the plants in the collection are hardy and covered by the Homebase five-year plant quality guarantee. Whilst, greenhouses, sheds and garden furniture are also available to buy online or in store, to help create the perfect outdoor environment.
With an eye on sustainability, at the end of the show the entire garden will be sold and all proceeds will be donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust, the official charity partner of Homebase.
