Jerry Brown of California and Andrew Cuomo of New York have much in common, according to veteran political journalist, Lou Cannon. "Both are Democrats and sons of famous Democratic governors. Both were elected governors of their respective states by decisive margins in 2010 in defiance of a national Republican trend. Both inherited hefty budget deficits--by-products of the Great Recession and past overspending. And both promised to seek political middle ground and deal realistically with the fiscal problems of their states."
Their results are far from similar according to Cannon. "The fortunes of Cuomo and Brown have diverged in ways that reflect their differing personalities and the dissimilar political processes of the states they govern, " Cannon explains in A Tale of Two Governors a comparative article published in the current edition of State Net Capitol Journal.
Cannon's insight into the success and failures of both governors when plagued by similar deficits and political opposition is vital reading for anyone who seeks to understand state-level politics. Cannon has been an active observer of state and national affairs for more than 40 years and is best known for his biographies of US President Ronald Reagan, having written five books about him. Cannon is currently a columnist and editorial advisor to State Net Capitol Journal a weekly publication focused on state legislation and politics.
