Mr. Fusco emphasized the fact that during this time of chaos that the best planned and prepared facilities will recover more quickly, protect their patients the best and be prepared to approach the reconstruction process the fastest.

Georgia Society for Health Care Risk Management, a chapter of the American Hospital Association. Topic of the presentation was “Best Practices in Claims Management After a Loss.”

Michael Fusco, Chief Executive Officer of WorldClaim Global Claims Management detailed the preparations necessary for hospitals, health care facilities and their risk managers in acquiring a “team” of their own to react to disasters immediately following a catastrophic loss.

Mr. Fusco emphasized the fact that during this time of chaos that the best planned and prepared facilities will recover more quickly, protect their patients the best and be prepared to approach the reconstruction process the fastest.

By assembling a team of emergency service responders, construction consultants and public adjusters, the health care facility will be able to employ a triage approach to the restoration of the property. Mr. Fusco’s triage approach is to:

  •     Secure the major facilities from further damage
  •     Relocate patients to the most efficient areas of the facility that still exist or transport them to a neighboring facility if the original facility is not available
  •     Assess the 30, 60 and 90 day plan for clean-up and recovery of the main facility
  •     Discuss the long-term restoration process with the insurance company’s representatives.

Mr. Fusco emphasized that it is important to get to know your “team’ prior to the event, as in the time of crisis the emergency services and restoration industry is stretched and therefore you will be competing for services. By having a long-standing relationship with your vendors, you will be “first in and best served”.

In times of crisis a risk manager who has properly prepared an EMS plan, aligned their team and approaches the claim process with a triage approach, can turn a disaster into their “finest hour” in approaching and recovering from a major catastrophic event, such as a tornado, hurricane or flood.

Mr. Fusco has been an insurance professional for over 33 years and is the Chief Executive Officer of WorldClaim Global Claims Management, a premier public adjusting firm based in Atlanta, Georgia.
