Benco Dental's relief efforts to help tornado victims in Alabama

Identifying step one is difficult when you find yourself at square one. On April 28, the day after tornados ravaged the state of Alabama, Benco Dental associates Nathan Cox, Kasey Powrzanas, Scott Gore and Ashley Harris drove through the hardest hit areas and surveyed the damage left behind.

What they witnessed was heartbreaking. As many as one million people were without power, nearly 14,000 homes were destroyed and more than 200 Alabama residents had been killed.

“There was no question that we were going to help our neighbors any way that we could,” said Cox. “After seeing the destruction firsthand, we came to the conclusion that we would focus our relief efforts on the area’s smaller communities including Concord, Phil Campbell and Hackleburg.”

The Benco Dental team’s plan of action for the Benco 4 Bama Relief Efforts project was two-fold. First, the team would reach out directly to local manufacturer representatives and ask for donations. Supplies requested ranged from diapers to hand sanitizers. To expand their outreach, the team also used its Facebook page to contact members of their community including local dentists and dental students.

Benco Dental transformed its Pelham showroom into a drop-off station for supplies. The response was overwhelming. Donations from large manufactures such as Septodont, Proctor & Gamble and Midmark as well as from Benco Dental employees began pouring in almost immediately.

The other element to the Benco 4 Bama Relief Efforts program involved working directly with the community. While donations were being gathered, Benco Dental employees were volunteering their time to help residents sort through wreckage, make repairs and offer emotional support.

Neighbors in Benco Dental’s Piedmont Region include, of course, dentists. While many dental offices had been spared from tornado destruction, a few Benco Dental customers saw their offices either severely damaged or completely destroyed.

“We are trying to help the dentists here any way that we can,” explained Matthew Thomas, territory representative for Benco Dental. “Not only are we offering them supplies, we are also helping them clean up their offices.”

Thomas notes, “You can’t imagine the destruction. It is important to remember that people are in pain here. And we are all in it together. These people are more than customers. They are our neighbors, our family.”

On May 27, the team loaded its trucks and delivered all of the items that had been generously donated to the American Legion in Fultondale, Alabama. Volunteers then distributed the supplies to those in need.

The Benco Dental team is determined to work with its neighbors as they rebuild their community and welcome any additional support.
