Refinery CMS Core Team Announces Refinery CMS 1.0

Share Article

Resolve Digital released their proprietary content management tool, Refinery CMS, as an open source project for the Rails community two years ago. Today, thanks to the many developers around the world who have contributed to the project, the core team announces the 1.0 release.

A truly fantastic CMS is a delight to both the programmer and the end user.

Refinery is a Ruby on Rails CMS that supports Rails 3. It's easy to extend and sticks to 'the Rails way' where possible. This means developers don't have a big learning-curve to start building websites and custom plug-ins or “engines.”

Since the public release, the project has grown rapidly. It is now used by leading tech companies including Google and Wildfire Interactive, and has been deployed to thousands of sites around the globe.

The significant milestones achieved include:

  •     July 2010, Localization added. Today Refinery speaks 25 languages.
  •     August 2010, Rails 3 support added (just 2 days after Rails 3 was released).
  •     October 2010, Finalist in the New Zealand Open Source Awards
  •     December 2010, Refinery becomes the most popular Rails CMS
  •     February 2011, the project has 100 contributors
  •     May 2011, over 1,400 followers on GitHub

Resolve Digital’s technical director, David Jones, started working on the CMS to meet the needs of our non-technical clients to manage and update their websites. Jones explains: “We've now built about 100 sites using Refinery and every time we sit down with the end user we gather feedback and make it easier for them to use. It's this feedback which has made Refinery different from other CMS options.”

Philip Arndt, core team leader, joined Resolve Digital shortly before the public release. Phil tells the other half of the Refinery CMS story: “To have a truly fantastic CMS, it needs to delight the programmer too.”
