Life Extension, a pioneer in the latest anti-aging research and integrative health therapies, while offering superior quality, research-backed dietary supplements, today announced the availability of two new products to aid in weight loss: Anti-Adipocyte Formula with AdipoStat and Advanced Anti-Adipocyte Formula with AdipoStat and Integra-Lean® African Mango Irvingia.

The new dietary supplements include powerful plant extracts of East Indian globe thistle (Sphaeranthus indicus) and mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), long prized in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for their weight management properties. The advanced formulation includes a proprietary extract of African bush mango seed (Irvingia gabonensis), which helps support healthy body weight management in combination with a reduced calorie diet and exercise. All ingredients work to target fat cell metabolism through several novel mechanisms.

“So many people today struggle with their weight,” said Dr. Steven V. Joyal, M.D., VP of Scientific and Medical Affairs at Life Extension. “To help with this issue, we are excited to offer scientifically studied nutritional methods to support healthy body weight based upon ancient West African and East Indian traditions.”

How It Works
Adipocytes (fat cells) are deposited throughout our bodies. They are comprised mainly of triglycerides and cholesterol housed within the fat cell membrane. As we age, adipocytes tend to expand and congregate in and around our abdominal region, which is not only cosmetically unsightly but associated with significant health risks. Preliminary scientific research suggests that in cell culture experiments with fat cells, the extracts of East Indian globe thistle and mangosteen rind (the tough, hard outer section rich in polyphenolic acids like xanthones and tannins) can help support healthy fat cell metabolism through multiple bio-molecular pathways, including:
1.    PPAR-gamma, which is critical for healthy growth and maturation of “young” fat cells (pre-adipocytes) into “mature” fat cells (adipocytes).
2.    Adipocyte differentiation-related protein (ADRP), which is important for lipid uptake and accumulation in fat cells.
3.    aP2, which is critical for the transport and utilization of fatty acids in fat cells.
4.    Perilipin, a protein that coats lipid droplets in fat cells and prevents them from being readily broken down.

A third extract, Integra-Lean® Irvingia African bush mango seed extract, targets key hormones involved in appetite control and regulation, including leptin.

Success in Clinical Trials:
In a key human clinical study(1) using a proprietary blend of East Indian globe thistle and mangosteen rind extracts, 60 obese subjects with Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30-40 were included in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study for eight weeks. Participants followed a 2,000 calorie-a-day diet and asked to walk 30 minutes five days a week. The experimental group was given 400 mg of the dual extract blend twice daily (prior to the two largest meals of the day).

At the end of the trial, the group receiving the extract blend experienced statistically significant improvements including a body weight change of 11.4 pounds in the active treatment group (compared with less than 4 pounds in the placebo group), waist circumference reduction by over four inches and a reduction in BMI of 2.05. Trends toward supporting healthy blood cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, and LDL/HDL ratio were also found in subjects taking the extract.

In 2009 (2), a double-blind study in humans tested the efficacy of African Mango extract for weight management. Irvingia demonstrated an average weight loss of over 20 pounds from baseline over 10 weeks, reduced inches off the waistline, and demonstrated beneficial effects upon leptin blood levels.

Anti-Adipoctye Formula with AdipoStat ($24) and Advanced Anti-Adipocyte Formula with AdipoStat and Integra-Lean® African Mango Irvingia ($27) are available at http://www.lef.org and at select vitamin retailers nationwide.
