The 2011 Texas Golf Edition of the Dallas Morning News recently ranked Woodforest Golf Club as the number one golf course in Texas. The rankings featured the top 25 public-access courses with fees of $60-$81 (fees include greens fee, cart, and tax during a prime Saturday tee time). A group of panelists consisting of professionals and amateurs from across the state voted on courses they have played. Their votes were based on versatility, shot making, remembrance, beauty, conditioning, and overall enjoyment.

Located in Montgomery, Woodforest Golf Club plays over 50,000 rounds of golf each year and the greens have received statewide and regional recognition as the best in Houston. Woodforest’s top priority is to provide players with the best daily playing conditions, placing emphasis on the player’s needs and the feel of the game over aesthetics. The course offers exceptional putting surfaces with the most consistent speeds possible; green speeds average between 11 and 12 on the stimpmeter 95% of the time.

The well-maintained facilities attract players from the greater Houston area and beyond, making it a prime setting for many prestigious events. Woodforest has hosted a variety of Texas Golf Association tournaments and qualifiers such as: State Amateur Qualifier, Mid-Am Qualifier, State Senior 4-Ball Championship, and TGA Legends Junior Tour tournaments. Additionally, Woodforest is entering its 4th year as the host of the 72-hole PGA Champions Tour Qualifying School. TGA South Texas Regional Coordinator John Cochran has worked closely with Woodforest Golf Club on various tournaments. “The staff at Woodforest is courteous and professional. They always do an incredible job keeping Woodforest in elite tournament condition. It is always a privilege to work with them,” says Cochran.

General Manager Tom Martty oversees the club’s overall operations. Martty is a Gulf States PGA Hall of Famer and former golf coach at LSU. “It is such an honor to be selected as the best golf course in the state from a panel who truly understands and respects golf. Our goal has always been to offer the best course that consistently meets our player’s expectations. They come first. We are proud to be known as a player’s course.”

Woodforest’s top ranking is up three spots from last year’s position with the expertise and hard work of Superintendent Patrick O’Neal. O’Neal and Martty work closely together to improve the conditions of the greens, tees, fairways, and bunkers. O’Neal has worked as the lead agronomist on several different PGA events and understands player’s expectations and course mechanics.

O’Neal is very satisfied with the rank because he knows actual players voted for Woodforest based on their experiences playing the course. “Our staff keeps the course in tournament playing conditions year-round. This award validates all of their hard work.”
