Jessica Saul Teaches Assigned Dance Teams Basic Step Techniques and Forms

Art is a form of expression that is needed now more than ever to help keep our youth active to prevent childhood obesity.

On Monday, June 6, 2011, the STEP IT UP Nike and Department of Youth and Community Development will host its final competition at Time Square’s Amsterdam Theater. The Art of Stepping™ founder, Jessica “Remo” Saul, was selected in February as the Dance Coach.

Since February, Remo has worked with three teams from Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx, which are the Ozone Step Team, Color of Peace, and the Notorious Steppers, respectively. As their Dance Coach, Remo was responsible for working with the teams to teach basic step techniques and form, provide suggested choreography that assists with performance fluidity, technicality, and difficulty, and the infusion of the social campaign topic that the team has chosen.

“As a choreographer, the biggest reward is to be able to work with our future generation and provide that extra push they need to believe in what they are doing,” said Remo. “Art is a form of expression that is needed now more than ever to help keep our youth active to prevent childhood obesity.”

Nike and The Department of Youth and Community Development partnered to develop the STEP IT UP dance/step campaign, a city-wide initiative that uses sport-arts as catalysts for social change. The campaign will elevate and mobilize young people through the art of dance/step, all while empowering teams to engage their communities around causes like education, anti-violence, homeless prevention, inequality, health, HIV/AIDS and the environment.
