At our fitness center, teens can be dropped off to work out under the care of a licensed physical therapist.
Brewer, ME (PRWEB) June 06, 2011
Building on the success of the adult fitness programs at Results Physical Therapy in Maine, owner Carol Lane has partnered with My Gym Children’s Fitness Center to offer specialized youth programs at her practice’s new 7,000-square-foot facility in Brewer. The recently opened wellness center, which relocated from Bangor in March, is the largest of Lane’s three clinics; the other two are located in Dexter and Dover-Foxcroft.
The Brewer My Gym is operated by Karen Kohlmeyer, who also serves as a pediatric physical therapist at Lane’s clinic. Kohlmeyer has more than 30 years of experience in pediatric physical therapy, and oversees a team of highly trained staff teachers and assistant teachers at My Gym. Lane and Kohlmeyer have made it their mission to promote fitness and preventative care among their patients and gym members at Results Physical Therapy in Maine – and that includes their youngest clientele.
“Researchers have found direct correlation between regular physical activity and overall health among children and adolescents. That’s why it’s critical for parents to make exercise part of their kids’ daily routine as early as possible,” said Lane. She also shared some alarming statistics published in a recent report* by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. “Studies show that fewer than one in three children between the ages of 6 and 17 engage in regular vigorous physical activity. So it should come as no surprise that half of all youths in those age groups are either overweight or obese. By promoting physical fitness among children and teens, our goal is to instill healthy habits that will last a lifetime.”
My Gym offers a variety of parent-participation and independent gym classes. The age-specific programs include Little Bundles (6 weeks to 6 months), Tiny Tykes (6 to 13 months), Waddlers (14 to 23 months), Gymsters (23 months to 2.5 years), Terrific Tots (2.5 to 3.25 years), Mighty Mites (3.25 to 4.5 years), Whiz Kids (4.5 to 6 years) and Cardio Kids (7 to 13 years). Parents can also book My Gym for private birthday parties on Friday and Saturday afternoons.
Other programs available at My Gym Brewer include a weekly Sports Class (4 to 7 years) that covers age-appropriate fundamentals of baseball, football, soccer, basketball and hockey, and Smart & Fit (2.5 years and up), a two-hour drop-off class that combines exercise and academic activities. Another offering unique to the Brewer My Gym is a Fit & Fun program, which provides free childcare to parents who are members of Results Fitness Center with children under age 3 enrolled in My Gym classes.
While My Gym caters to children up to 13 years old, Results Physical Therapy and Wellness Center in Brewer also has programs designed for teens. In addition to a full-service physical therapy clinic with three treatment rooms, the facility boasts a spacious fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment and seven cardio machines.
“A lot of gyms either don’t allow teenagers or require parental supervision. At our fitness center, teens can be dropped off to work out under the care of a licensed physical therapist,” noted Lane. “Our staff will help kids set and achieve fitness goals by creating a customized program with aerobics, weight-training and/or calisthenics. We provide a fun, safe, friendly and knowledgeable environment that teenagers can feel comfortable in, whether they’re looking to lose weight, improve their physical condition for sports or just maintain a healthy level of physical activity if they’re not into sports. Our programs empower children and teens to get and stay fit – which can help them avoid chronic pain and health issues later in life.”
