Perio Protect: Non-surgical method to help with gum disease

Millions of Americans have gum disease: gingivitis or periodontitis. Dr. Marinic can provide his patients with a new technology in his Evanston dental office to fight gum disease.

Gum disease is the result of a bacterial infection in your tissue surrounding the teeth. Common signs of oral bacterial infections in the gum tissue include:

  •     Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  •     Receding gums (teeth appear longer)
  •     Plaque, tartar or calculus
  •     Gaps developing between your teeth
  •     Swollen, red or tender gums
  •     Persistent bad breath
  •     Sensitive teeth
  •     Teeth are loose or mobile

Bacterial infections can develop when food, bacteria, and tartar are left on the teeth. Brushing, flossing, and regularly scheduled hygiene appointments are recommended. If the bacteria take over and are left unchecked, it can damage the gums, teeth, and bone. Left untreated, periodontal disease may even damage your health as there is a strong correlation between periodontal disease and heart disease. Bacteria can enter the bloodstream through the gums and pockets around the teeth. Those same bacteria have been found in the artery plaque again stressing the importance of proper oral hygiene. Dr. Daniel K. Marinic always tells his patients that “A healthy body starts with a healthy mouth.”

In the past, gum disease was treated with a deep cleaning or for more advanced cases by surgical methods. Dr. Marinic has been trained to provide his patients with the option for a non-surgical, non-invasive method to treat periodontal disease called Perio Protect®.

Perio Protect® is a custom, comprehensive method that helps manage the bacteria in the pockets between teeth and gum tissue. The program is a combination of custom trays for the patients with treatments including a non-invasive chemical debriding therapy (antimicrobial gel) and traditional mechanical debriding, as well as the visits to the office for evaluation and treatment. Dr. Marinic works with his entire staff at the Evanston dental office to successfully manage the treatment. The goal of the Perio Protect Method™ is to manage the bacteria and plaque builds up around the teeth.

The standard cleaning procedures in dental offices on a regular basis help remove plaque and tartar and help reduce bacteria. However, since bacteria reproduce so quickly, it is difficult to control them between office visits. Perio Protect® is the added punch to help.
