Ann Arbor software company, Handoff Solutions LLC, is in the business of helping patients and doctors make consultations more productive by ensuring radiology studies arrive in advance of patients—saving patients considerable delays and angst. The service, MeAndMyDocs, currently used by hundreds of healthcare providers enables medical staff to electronically request, receive, view (PC or Mac browser), and then electronically transfer the images to radiology in advance of a patient’s initial consultation.
“We give physicians’ offices the tools they need to make patient visits as productive as possible”, says physician and founder, Jeffrey Terrell, MD, an Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon. “We developed this software when we realized how many different medical and surgical specialists were unable to give answers to patients during the initial appointment, because adequate radiology studies were not available.”
Patients traveling to specialty hospitals, cancer centers, or academic medical centers often have prior radiology studies, such as MRI scans or CT scans. Dr. Terrell’s team discovered a large number of medical and surgical colleagues were seeing patients that travelled hours for their visits. But, many patients arrive with old imaging studies, inadequate studies, or no studies at all. Occasionally the studies, which are transported on CD-ROM, could not be viewed because of hardware, software, or security-related technology barriers.
The innovative HIPAA-compliant service, MeAndMyDocs, helps patients get “one touch care”, by allowing physicians to invite their patients or referring physicians to securely upload the imaging studies in advance of the patient’s appointment. The physician’s team can all review the studies from any PC or Mac browser, and, if necessary, schedule additional studies just before the patient see the specialist. With all of the records and imaging data accessible, doctors can complete their evaluation and make a treatment recommendation in one visit, not two visits. With a single button click, the medical staff can transfer the studies directly to their EHR (electronic health record) system for archive or review.
The service benefits are immediately obvious to both patients and providers, since most people have suffered delays when they hand deliver a CD-ROM to a physician who can’t easily access the images. Medical staffs are delighted to improve office operations and expedite the healthcare process. Hospital executives and insurers recognize that this sort of technology is an important tool to providing efficient and quality care reducing duplicate imaging studies, and supporting second opinion or destination-type specialty programs.
