"This NG9-1-1 platform...will allow us to answer those calls and dispatch them to the appropriate first responders at a more efficient rate.”

Three public safety answering points (PSAPs) in Dyer County, Tenn., are now ready to meet next generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) standards with the latest upgrade to the geo-diverse Sentinel® Patriot® call processing solution from emergency communications leader Cassidian Communications, an EADS North America company.

“Putting all our call centers on the same call handling platform will allow seamless backup and support, should any of our call centers become inoperable,” said Mark Grant, emergency operations director, Dyer County. “We are here to serve the community by answering requests for police, fire and medical services, and having this NG9-1-1 platform in place will allow us to answer those calls and dispatch them to the appropriate first responders at a more efficient rate.”

The Dyersburg 911 Center, with its four call taking positions, serves the citizens of Dyersburg; the Newbern 911 Center has two call taking positions serving the citizens of Newbern; and the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office serves the citizens in the remainder of Dyer County with two call taking positions.

“Tennessee currently is in the process of offering a new statewide 9-1-1 network where emergency calls will be routed over the statewide network directly to the appropriate call center. With our upgrade to the Sentinel Patriot solution, our call centers will be ready when the statewide network is established,” continued Grant.

“Dyer County call centers now have the ability to receive additional data to better serve the community and coordinate a more rapid response of first responders at the scene of an emergency,” said Darrin J. Reilly, chief operating officer, Cassidian Communications. “The County also has taken additional measures to ensure its system is always operational by having two servers in different locations. This backup will allow calls to continue to come in should one of the servers go down.”

The Sentinel Patriot solution’s IP architecture, designed expressly for NG9-1-1 applications, is based on current and evolving critical communications technologies and standards. This allows for the sophisticated design of backup, disaster recovery, and overflow operations with the assured ability to provide reliable service under unexpected conditions. The geo-diverse deployment model provides maximum system survivability, and the efficient network architecture design minimizes data traffic and bandwidth usage for ongoing cost savings.

Cassidian Communications continues to serve clients ranging from public safety operations to Fortune 1000 corporations to federal agencies. Collectively, the company has more than 40 years of experience deploying 9-1-1 call processing solutions, notification solutions and first-responder digital trunked radio networks.
