Tangible feedback is a huge help in directing vocal technique and training.

WIV LLC is pleased to announce the release of Passaggio, the all-inclusive training tool for singers. Passaggio is a real-time vocal feedback program that displays the human voice on the spot as the singer is singing.

With Passaggio, singers can see their voice pitch, vocal quality, and loudness displayed on a musical staff in real time as they sing. Seeing vocal faults as they happen makes it easier to identify and correct vocal problems.

Passaggio displays voice pitch as a line of dots. Good vocal quality shows up as an organized line of dots. Poor vocal quality is displayed as a disorganized line of dots. Green dots indicate low singing volume and red dots show loud volume. Several shades of color from green to red are used to indicate volume.

The Passaggio application is the perfect singer’s tool for lessons, auditions, or general practicing. Passaggio for Windows runs on Windows XP and above on PC’s, notebooks, and netbook computers. Passaggio will also run on Intel based Mac computers in Windows VMs or with Crossover.

Passaggio for the IPhone runs on the IPhone, ITouch, and IPad with armv7 processors. View a YouTube demo of Passaggio for the IPhone here.

Passaggio is the first real world application containing the proprietary WIV time domain signal processing algorithm. Some possible uses for the WIV algorithm include pitch detection, karaoke singer scoring, realtime acoustic data display, cochlear implants, phoneme based speech recognition systems, and speech therapy applications.

WIV is currently developing audio applications that contain the WIV algorithm to demonstrate its viability, and will be announcing other products soon.

About the WIV Algorithm

The WIV time domain processing method translates the sound waveform, with its multiple sound sources and reverberations, into a sequential stream of fine-grained particles called “Waveform Information Vectors” (WIVs.)

Each waveform cycle is treated as an independent event and is encoded as a WIV by its fundamental dimensions of time and energy. Thus, each WIV particle independently carries information of its source and, because of its short duration, makes it possible to extract its information separately from other WIVs.

Meaning is extracted from the stream of WIVs by both learning and recognizing patterns in the time sequences. This is done by a unique instantaneous pattern recognizer. Thus, all WIV processing is locked, or synchronized with the input waveform and will output a result each time a WIV particle enters the system so that WIV processing is not hampered by windowing.

Physically, the WIV processor is structured as an analog computer that operates solely by using a hierarchy of matrix-oriented logic decisions. It does not use arithmetic computations. This means that the WIV algorithm is highly efficient and can be easily burned into a microchip.

Passaggio for Windows is available here for download at the introductory price of $37.00.

Passaggio for the IPhone is in the ITunes AppStore at the introductory price of $4.99.
