Vor-Tek Recovery Solutions announced today that their team will move forward to the final phase of the $1.4 Million Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE. In the wake of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the challenge was launched to find innovative, rapidly deployable, and highly efficient methods of capturing crude oil from the ocean surface.

“We are excited to be a finalist in the XPrize Oil Cleanup Challenge, and part of the advancement of new technologies for the protection of the ocean,” said Ashley Day, team-leader and CEO of Vor-Tek. “Last year’s Gulf oil spill highlighted the need for new technologies and oil spill recovery capabilities to be available anywhere oil is drilled, refined, processed or handled. All of the competing finalists in this prize are helping to improve the environmental safety standards that should be the norm for ocean protection as long as we continue to use oil in our daily lives.”

Day’s partner in Vor-tek is Fred Giovannitti. Fred, a visionary entrepreneur and Las Vegas legend, brings a diverse background to the team. Giovannitti is a renowned Skin Artist, founder of Tatlantis, and is best known for his keen eye of the aesthetic, as well as his skill to achieve the desired results in a clean and sustainable environment. Mr. Giovannitti’s work can be seen on celebrities, medical professionals, and fashion models the world over. He shares Day’s vision of providing sustainable clean-up solutions for the world's oceans and all waterways. Says Giovannitti “The issue of the Pacific Trash Vortex has been particularly important to us and has itself become a launch pad for a number of ideas and innovations targeting marine pollution such as our patented Emergency Extraction Line System (E.E.L) which focuses on oil extraction from marine environments.” Vor-tek’s entry into the competition is a modification of this system.

During Phase I of the competition, teams across the globe submitted their ideas to clean up oil spills. The top 10 teams, including Vor-Tek Recovery Solutions, will advance to Phase II Field Testing, where they will demonstrate their system, and vie for a $1 million Grand Prize.
