Armed Forces Insurance (http://www.afi.org) has been recognized as one of the Best Companies to Work For in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Ingram’s magazine, one of the region’s leading business publications, named AFI one of six winners among medium-sized companies.

“We are so proud of the performance of our amazing employees,” said Kurt H. Seelbach, president and chief executive officer. “Our executive leadership group is committed to giving our employees the tools and the authority they need to deliver an outstanding experience to our members. We remain committed to developing a ‘learning’ culture in which feedback from both employees and members is constantly evaluated to improve our organization.”

Ingram’s noted that the 124-year-old AFI stayed up to date with a top-to-bottom review of its compensation and benefits structures, which resulted in incentive opportunities and salary upgrades that better reflect market conditions. The business magazine also praised AFI’s consumer-driven health plan, health savings accounts, improved programs for paid time off and flexible work schedules, including telecommuting.

But Armed Forces Insurance was especially recognized for the fact that the executive leadership asked its nearly 200 employees to live out the company’s motto “Our Mission is You,” by focusing on service to both the military members they serve and the Leavenworth community.

That directive has given AFI employees a common mission, according to Scott Neilan, director of Human Resources. “The service ethic focused on others naturally enhances our daily interaction with each other, which creates what we believe to be a highly engaged and transformative workplace.”

The external service efforts of AFI include Rehabbing with the Troops, which bolsters the recovery of soldiers wounded in combat, sponsorship of the Military Spouse of the Year Award and the establishment of a Family and Community Committee, which coordinates fundraising activities.

Ingram’s compiles the list annually, targeting all forms of companies and dividing the candidates into three categories: Large, Medium and Small Companies. The list recognizes that each business treats its employees well, providing opportunities, strong and helpful benefits, a great work environment and a healthy financial outlook. This is the fourth year Ingram’s has published this list, with the first released in 2008.
