Southlake, Texas (PRWEB) June 10, 2011
As a board certified dermatologist and founder of Southlake Dermatology, Angela Bowers-Plott, M.D., knows very well the harmful effects of the sun. For this reason, she worked with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) to secure an $8,000 grant for a permanent sun shade structure that was installed at Johnson Elementary School in Southlake.
“Limiting sun exposure from an early age is critical to preventing skin damage and cancer later in life,” explains Dr. Bowers-Plott, who worked with school faculty and other volunteers to complete the application process. “The sun shade allows the kids to play outside year-round while also being protected from the sun.”
The AAD’s shade structure program was started in 2000 and has awarded 212 grants nationwide for the purchase of permanent shade structures designed to provide ultraviolet (UV) ray protection for outdoor areas. To be considered, a school or nonprofit organization must serve children and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to sun safety and skin cancer awareness. It must also have a sun safety/skin cancer awareness program in place for at least a year.
According to Dr. Bowers-Plott, the installation ceremony May 6 was made more special by the appearance of Jack D. Johnson, the school’s namesake and first superintendent for Carroll ISD, as well as a skin cancer survivor.
