New York, NY (PRWEB) June 08, 2011
Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) performed a rigorous search to find the right partner to help redesign North Community High School, the oldest high school in Minneapolis. After winnowing the possibilities down to three intermediaries who met with district and community stakeholders and then presented their plans to the community in a public forum, nonprofit school turnaround organization ISA was selected.
ISA’s history of successfully partnering with school districts and communities to transform underperforming high schools into new academically rigorous and personalized schools in large urban districts like Atlanta, New York City and Detroit was a deciding factor.
MPS Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson agreed: “To realize our vision for this school will require hard work, commitment and effort. Most importantly, it will require each of us to think and work differently than we ever have before. ISA has demonstrated an ability to partner successfully with very disparate schools and districts. We agree that North must be a place that students are proud to call home and we are dedicated to working closely together to meet this goal.”
On the ISA side, the dedication of the North community was a very positive signal: “It is wonderful to see a community so engaged in creating a positive future for their school,” said CEO Gerry House after the public presentation. “This is powerful evidence of readiness for a productive district/community/ISA partnership.”
A school redesign team with members from the district, the school, the community and from ISA has already been assembled and has had its kickoff meeting. Some members of the committee traveled to New York last week to see six ISA schools in action and to network with those school leaders.
Said CEO House, “One of ISA’s strengths is our large network of schools and our thoughtful and generous-spirited school leaders. Sharing best practices, collaborating to problem solve, taking the time to help colleagues – those are hallmarks of the ISA community. We are honored to welcome MPS and the North High School Community into the ISA network.”
