The leading Ecuadorian exporters of coffee and cocoa are hosting a trade fair for global buyers. “Aromas de Ecuador” will take place in the country’s second largest city, Guayaquil August 24 to 28, 2011. The President of Ecuador Dr. Rafael Correa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Ricardo Patiño and Maria Fernanda De Luca, Executive Director of Pro Ecuador, will preside over the opening ceremonies.

The four days of activities will introduce new and existing customers to the premium, award winning products available; as well as showcase the advances in technology and product quality which allow for competitive pricing. In addition to the trade show aspect, seminars, forum discussions and visits to various plantations have been arranged.

Coffee in Ecuador
Coffee has a long history in Ecuador, introduced in the early 19th century; coffee became the country’s main export in the early 20th century. Ecuador has all the components to grow outstanding coffee. Positioned between Colombia and Peru, the interior mountain ranges have plenty of altitude, weather patterns, and ideal soil for quality coffee production.

Cocoa in Ecuador
Ecuador is renowned throughout the world for producing a special single origin ‘fine’ cocoa called Arriba. It’s an aromatic, floral and spicy cocoa, which makes a chocolate that has all the characteristics that consumers like.

The world cocoa market distinguishes between two broad categories of cocoa bean: ‘fine’ or ‘flavor’ cocoa beans, and ‘bulk’ or ‘ordinary’ cocoa beans. As a generalization, fine or flavor cocoa beans are produced from Criollo or Trinitario cocoa tree varieties, while bulk cocoa beans come from Forastero trees. The International Cocoa Organisation (ICCO) has a panel of fine cocoa experts who decide on the countries, such as Ecuador, that are recognized as producers of fine cocoa.
