Memphis, TN (PRWEB) June 08, 2011
Strayer University will host internationally recognized social media strategist Neal Schaffer, author of “Windmill Networking: Understanding, Leveraging & Maximizing LinkedIn,” for two free workshops on “The Power of Social Media in the Professional World” on Thursday, June 16 at the University’s Thousand Oaks Campus in Memphis.
With an unemployment rate over 10 percent in Memphis, Strayer University is offering the workshops as a community service to assist job seekers and those currently employed to help improve their use of social networking tools in their professional lives. The workshops will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Strayer University, located at 2620 Thousand Oaks Drive, at exit 18 of Interstate 240 near Memphis International Airport. Space is limited, and participants must pre-register at http://www.strayer.edu/careerpower.
“Many people try to dismiss social networking as a fad or a game, but there is plenty of evidence that companies use tools such as LinkedIn and Twitter to connect with potential employees,” said Schaffer, president of Windmills Marketing in Newport Beach, Calif. “By making a daily commitment to polish and promote your personal brand online, you can build a network of people who can help you find your next job, provide an opening to your next career step and keep you apprised of industry news. Your experience in doing so will only benefit your future professional growth within your current or next company.”
Schaffer’s second book, “Maximizing LinkedIn for Sales and Social Media Marketing” is scheduled to go on sale July 1, and the workshops will preview insights from the book. He is currently writing a third book, slated for release in late 2011, that will focus on using Twitter in the business world.
“I tell people that social media is not a campaign, it’s a commitment,” Schaffer said. “Many companies are embracing the digital sphere as a way not only to do ongoing outreach to professionals in their industry, but also as a method of generating business. Sites like LinkedIn are, at their core, networking platforms that are good for both job seekers and the currently employed, but unfortunately many people do not use them to their full potential.”
The workshops will offer insights to anyone with an interest in learning how use social media in their professional life, regardless of their level of expertise in this evolving medium.
“The metro Memphis area mirrors the national economic struggle, and we’re hosting these workshops as a way of giving back to the Memphis community where we live and work,” said Angela Barclift-McGee, Senior Vice Provost of Strayer University. “If there’s one thing besides the economy that has changed our lives in the past three years, it is social networking. Our workshop taps into this powerful and rapidly changing tool to help area adults sharpen their job searching, networking and personal branding skills.”
