Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) June 10, 2011
Elsevier, the leading publisher of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, announced today that Meir Kryger, MD, Thomas Roth, PhD and William Dement, MD, PhD, authors of the newly published fifth edition of “Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine”, will participate in a book signing on Tuesday, June 14 from 1pm to 3pm at the 2011 American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s SLEEP annual meeting in Minneapolis, MN, at the Elsevier booth #901.
An estimated 50-70 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder, according to the National Institute of Health. Sleep research done in Dr. Kryger’s laboratory, the Sleep Disorders Centre at St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada, has had an important impact on clinical practice for sleep breathing disorders, such as the discovery of sleep apnea as well as the publication of the first systematic study of oxygen in the interaction between heart failure and sleep respiration.
For over two decades, “Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine” has been a staple on the bookshelves of Sleep Medicine professionals across the world. The recently published fifth edition and its companion guide, “Atlas of Clinical Sleep Medicine” will be showcased at Sleep 2011. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to meet Drs. Kryger, Roth, and Dement. Dr. Kryger is the Director of Sleep Research and Education at Gaylord Sleep Medicine and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Thomas Roth is the Head of the Division of Sleep Disorders Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan. Dr. William Dement is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science and the Director or the Sleep Disorders Center at Stanford University School of Medicine.
“Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine,” delivers the comprehensive, dependable guidance clinicians need to effectively diagnose and manage even the most challenging sleep disorders. Updates to genetics and circadian rhythms, occupational health, sleep in older people, memory and sleep, physical examination of the patient, comorbid insomnias, and much more keep clinicians current on the newest areas of the field. A greater emphasis on evidence-based approaches helps readers make the most well-informed clinical decisions. The fifth edition features a new format - both in print and online - that allows readers to find the answers they need more quickly and easily.
Dr. Kryger’s newest publication, “Kryger’s Sleep Medicine Review”, will also make its debut at the Sleep 2011 meeting. The Sleep Medicine Board Examination changed significantly in 2009. Before the publication of Dr. Kryger’s newest text, no board review product existed that followed the exam format.
“My goal has been to present the science and practice of sleep medicine to clinicians who work in the field who need to understand the background and principles of how they are doing what they are doing,” said Kryger. “With this new text, those studying for the board will get a comprehensive review tool that will allow them to not only experience what the questions of the new format will be like, but also get tips on passing the exam and what to expect on the day of.”
“Kryger’s Sleep Medicine Review” appeals to two main groups of readers: those who want a self-assessment and learning tool, and those who are preparing to take the certification exam. This interactive board review is comprised of approximately 400 questions that correspond directly to the clinical areas tested on the exam, providing users with essentially two full tests. Each chapter begins with a clinical case that simulates real life situations encountered in daily practice. Each case is followed by multiple-choice questions that deal with diagnosis and management. Answers come with a full explanation and key terms are italicized throughout and defined at the end, with each chapter including a brief summary of key learning points. The mix of questions is weighted to the same percentage as the actual exam. In addition to the core content, Dr. Kryger includes two appendices on “How to Prepare for the Board Exam” and “Tips to Help You Pass the Exam.”
