Penn-Mar Human Services, with the unanimous vote of their Board of Directors, announces the promotion of Gregory T. Miller to the position of President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) effective July 1, 2011.
The decision to promote Greg Miller is part of Penn-Mar’s long-term strategic plan. Miller, who joined Penn-Mar Human Services 23 years ago, has since 2000, overseen Penn-Mar’s everyday operations as Chief Operating Officer. He has played an essential role in building the nonprofit human service organization from a $600,000 start-up to a $21.5 million agency that serves more than 400 men and women with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Pennsylvania and Maryland. As President and COO, Miller will broaden his role in day-to-day management and work with the Board on implementing strategic priorities.
“Penn-Mar has established itself as a progressive and forward thinking organization with continuing dedication to both its service and people. Greg’s promotion, together with Penn-Mar’s commitment to innovative leadership, will ensure the success of the agency for many more years to come,” says Keith Peterson, Penn-Mar’s CEO. “As CEO, I will continue in my role to provide overall leadership with increased focus on external relations related to advocacy, public policy and fundraising.”
This decision, with the concurrence of the CEO and Board of Directors, was part of a set of recommendations resulting from a 90-day process of sustainability and succession planning led by the Sustainability Task Force of the Board’s Governance Committee with assistance from Tom Adams, President of TransitionGuides Inc. TransitionGuides is a national consulting company based in Silver Spring MD which provides leadership and sustainability consulting to leading nonprofit organizations.
A major focus of this planning was ensuring the continuity of the long-term success of Penn-Mar by building on its culture of caring and high quality services to individuals and families.
An ordained minister, Miller is the Pastor of Marriage and Worship at Westminster Baptist Church. He holds a bachelor’s from Shippensburg University, a master’s from McDaniel College and studied Strategies for Human Services Management at Harvard University. He has presented at numerous conferences nationally and internationally and is an active board member of several nonprofit organizations. Miller resides in Westminster, Md., with his family.
Penn-Mar Human Services, founded in 1981, serves more than 400 adults with developmental disabilities through its residential, respite, educational, vocational and supported employment programs in northern Baltimore, Carroll and Harford Counties in Maryland, and in southern York County in Pennsylvania.
