Giving Financial Information Over the Phone Can Result in Devastating Losses

Evansville, IN news station WFIE issued a bulletin warning residents to be especially cautious when receiving unsolicited phone calls requesting personal banking information.

According to the report, residents are receiving unsolicited phone calls from automated messages claiming to be representing well-known financial institutions. The message indicates that the account holder’s debit or credit cards have been cancelled and in order to correct the problem with the account the account holder must enter their account number and other details via the touch tone system in the automated message. These con artists then use the account numbers and other details they obtain to steal hundreds, even thousands of dollars from unsuspecting citizens.

The report goes on to say that the calls have come from various numbers and that most of the time the caller or automated message does not identify which institution they are calling from. Police investigating complaints believe that the scam originated in a foreign country and that the likelihood of identifying and catching the people responsible for this scam and recouping the stolen money is slim.

“We can take a report,” said Sergeant Sam Smith of the Evansville Police Department. “But if the suspects live in Nigeria or Jamaica, there is not much we can do." urges people to take the following precautions if they receive an unsolicited phone call requesting account and personal information:

  •     Using caller ID or requesting a contact number for the individual calling, use to verify the number and find out additional information about where the call is coming from.
  •     Contact the financial institution directly. Look up the number for bank or financial institution calling on their official website or on statements or other legitimate documents and call them directly. Specifically ask about the suspicious calls and verify any issues reported with your account.
  •     Never give out financial or personal information over the phone to an unsolicited caller. Legitimate financial institutions will never call and request account information over the phone.
  •     Report suspicious calls to the financial institutions being impersonated and local police.
