Lifestyle Magazine Coming to Ulster

The newspaper hosted a pre-publication presentation to business and community leaders at Mariner's Harbor in Kingston Wednesday evening to unveil plans for the lifestyle magazine for the county.

"We're very excited about the launch of Ulster Magazine," executive editor Derek Osenenko told the crowd of nearly 50 people. "We have been working on this project for months, and at each step of the way we have included the voices of those we hope to cover in every edition."

He added the magazine will focus on the general lifestyle needs, tastes and interests of Ulster County Baby Boomers.

Ulster Magazine will have an initial press run of 10,000 issues and be available for free at about 200 locations throughout the county.

While the magazine will be focused on reaching county residents, Dow Jones Local Media Group advertising executive Greg Appel said the magazine would fill a "media void" in the county. He also explained to the crowd that visitors and newcomers to the area — tourists and weekenders — also will be drawn to it by its sophisticated look.

It follows the publishing success of Orange Magazine, which is now in its fourth year of publication, said The Record's Ulster Magazine Editor Brenda Gilhooly, who oversees both lifestyle publications.

Leonard Bell, who advertises his family's Newburgh Ethan Allen store in Orange Magazine, invoked its name in urging support for the new venture. He said it's been a "win-win" proposition for him in Newburgh and it could work in Ulster as well.

"People look forward to getting Orange Magazine," he said. "Following the same format, (Ulster) can be a happy experience for everyone."

As she assumes responsibility for Ulster Magazine, Gilhooly said: "We'll cover artists and foodies and folks growing their businesses and flexing their creative muscles." There are stories abounding in Ulster, "and we've got some of the finest writers and photographers to tell those stories."

Times Herald-Record Publisher Joe Vanderhoof said "Ulster County is unique for the creative energies of its people and communities. We hope to capture that uniqueness in each edition, providing engaging content for readers and distinct opportunities for advertisers."
