About once a year, you might catch Dr. Karyn Holt on campus at Drexel University. But her classroom is actually about 4,400 miles from the heart of the Philadelphia campus. Dr. Holt, a supporting presenter at this year’s WACE (World Association of Cooperative Education) being held this week at Drexel University, and recipient of numerous awards honoring her commitment to education, lives and works in Anchorage, Alaska.
Dr. Holt, Associate Clinical Professor at Drexel’s College of Nursing and Health Professions, has been a member of Drexel Online’s faculty since 2003. She is passionate both about online learning and Drexel. “I wanted to be a part of an academic community that has innovation close to its heart. Drexel is certainly that,” says Holt. “I’ve had opportunities to teach at other universities, yet I continue to teach at Drexel. Drexel’s student outcomes are exceptional, our faculty are innovative and effective and allow and encourage our students to be successful.”
What surprises Dr. Holt the most about teaching online is the close relationships that develop over the course of study between her and her students. Often, it becomes a continuing professional relationship after graduation, as well. “What makes us different is that we are interested in the outcomes. We don’t lecture students, we guide them,” says Holt. “Our national initial licensure rate has been 100% the past three years, an unheard of feat, while the advanced practitioner certification rate also approaches 100%. Drexel Online affords students the opportunity to earn a degree from one of the most well respected programs in the United States from anywhere in the United Sates.”
Research shows that online learning in the United States is growing in leaps and bounds. Consumers of higher education are choosing online learning not only for convenience and flexibility, but because it delivers the education promised. According to Dr. Holt, “I know personally this is true at Drexel.”
