Despite the fact that retail sales are down, the retail trade industry continues to boost hiring by placing 1,300 new job ads online for Marketing Managers in May 2011, according to WANTED Analytics (, the leading source of real-time business intelligence for the talent marketplace. This represents a 28% growth in job ads for this occupation from May 2010.

Although this increase in online job ads may indicate that the retail industry is growing, a talent shortage for Marketing Managers with retail experience has evolved as a recruiting challenge. Due to this increased competition among retail employers for Marketing Managers, recruiters will likely experience difficulties in sourcing candidates, longer hiring cycles, and more expenses involved with filling Marketing Manager openings. According to the Hiring Scale™, there are only 1.7 potential candidates in the workforce for each available position advertised during May. The three metropolitan areas demanding the most retail-related Marketing Managers are Seattle, New York, and San Francisco. In these areas, recruiters may see even more challenging conditions since more job ads have been advertised online than their talent pools can fill.

The Hiring Scale measures conditions in local job markets by comparing hiring demand and labor supply. The Hiring Scale™ is part of the WANTED Analytics platform that offers business intelligence for the talent marketplace.
