We were excited to share what we've learned with the School on Wheels tutors working with children who can truly benefit from personalized instruction and mentorship.

The 1 On 1 Academic Tutors Foundation is proud to support L.A. non-profit School on Wheels this week, beginning with a special training for volunteer tutors and concluding with a cash donation and cause campaign on Twitter and Facebook.
“We are tremendously impressed by School on Wheels and their dedicated volunteers,” said Jason Daniel Illoulian, Co-Founder and President of the 1 On 1 Academic Tutors Foundation. “As a non-profit Foundation, we seek to partner with community organizations that share our mission of empowering youth through education, and we are very happy that we can help this outstanding group of people.”
School on Wheels is a non-profit organization providing tutoring and other educational resources to homeless children in the greater Los Angeles area. From Santa Barbara to Orange County, School on Wheels pairs homeless students with volunteer tutors who help them with schoolwork at least once a week.
On Saturday, June 11, staff from the 1 On 1 Academic Tutors Foundation presented a special training for the volunteer tutors of School on Wheels. The agenda included strategies to maximize learning and help their students succeed with short-term and long-term goals.
“As a company, we have expertise in providing high-quality tutoring that helps students make rapid progress in school,” said David Moses Manshoory, Co-Founder of the 1 On 1 Academic Tutors Foundation. “We were excited to share some of what we’ve learned with the School on Wheels tutors who are working with children who can truly benefit from personalized instruction and mentorship.”
Whitney Gallagher, Director of Private Tutoring for 1 On 1 Academic Tutors, presented on literacy and educational psychology. “Many adults aren’t aware of how dramatically their communication – including the way they give praise or suggestions – can change students’ attitudes and openness to learning,” she said. “We covered research-based methods that build lasting, intrinsic motivation and to help students connect to books in a meaningful way.”
Melissa Cantu, Director of Curriculum, presented strategies for teaching math, with a focus on fun and engaging games and instruction.
“The math games were wonderful, because the kids that we work with do not have enough ‘fun’ in their lives,” said Sinead Chilton, Marketing Consultant for School on Wheels. “If we can make something as mundane as math fun, then we are doing our job as one-on-one tutors. We truly appreciate 1 On 1 Academic Tutors for taking the time to help our tutors.”
To continue their contribution to School on Wheels, the 1 On 1 Academic Tutors Foundation will donate $1 for every new follower on Twitter or new “like” received on the 1 On 1 Academic Tutors Facebook page (up to $1,000), between midnight on Monday, June 13 and 11:59 pm on Friday, June 17.
The public is encouraged to join the social media campaign and help support the education of homeless youth in Southern California.
