Author’s life story to be featured at the 2011 National Education Association Book Exhibit

An autobiography of a globe-trotting female maverick, East Meets West: Life Story chronicles the odyssey of Kumiko Watanuki, a Japanese woman who struggled and overcame the cultural, philosophical, and racial barriers between the Western and Eastern civilization during a turbulent time in the world.

The author recollects how she coped with Western values and beliefs which are different from her Eastern principles as she shares her journey through two different worlds. It is a telling of one person’s past, present and future between two different worlds: East and West. Her personal journey begins with the family and cultural history. Her espoused philosophical and ethical values are deeply rooted by the blending of Shintoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. She is often asked how a person of Eastern ideas and values could function in the United States where the Western philosophy dominates. “Not easy,” she says.

“Watanuki’s inspiring story is one of continuous growth, development and adventure. It is a testimony to all that the banquet of life has to offer from someone who continues to go back to the table for greater and greater fulfillment.”—Veronica Buckley, Adjunct Faculty, DePaul University

In this volume, the author calls for social justice through education, and the end of racial prejudice, and discrimination. Inspiring, entertaining, and filled with written snapshots of the author’s bittersweet life experiences, East Meets West: Life Story is the unforgettable saga of the life and times of one extraordinary woman.

This book will be featured at this year’s National Education Association Book Exhibit in Chicago, IL, on June 30 to July 1, 2011.
