Blo, a popular hair salon located in Raleigh, N.C., has been named the grand-prize winner in the nationally acclaimed “Salons of the Year” interior design competition sponsored by SALON TODAY, the leading business publication for the professional salon industry. The salon, owned by Bryan Nunes, is featured on the cover of the June 2011 issue of SALON TODAY.

“Our judges were impressed with the way Nunes and his team designed a space that touched on all the senses,” said Stacey Soble, editor-in-chief of SALON TODAY.

Blo underwent a makeover of its own last year, doubling in size to more than 4,600 square feet. The expansion transformed Blo’s already award-winning space to add a second color bar, a second styling gallery, two makeup styling galleries, and a waxing room. As the largest hair salon in North and South Carolina, Blo can accommodate a large wedding party and yet still maintain a personalized approach with individual guests. Features that are recognized with this latest award.

Salons competing in the annual “Salons of the Year” competition were either newly constructed or remodeled salons that opened between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2011. Blo is the grand-prize winner among hundreds of entrants. Three runners-up also were chosen and 16 salons were named salons of distinction.

Background information and images of all 20 winning salons are posted at http://www.salontoday.com.

“In addition to a very clean and contemporary design, we also noticed a trend at Blo of maximizing every square foot of space to the benefit of staff and to enhance guests’ salon experience,” said Soble. “After a few years of a tough economy, we were delighted to see the number of nominations go up 20 percent this year—it’s a positive sign of recovery.”

With the expansion, Nunes was adamant about retaining pockets of intimacy at Blo. “We are humbled to receive such a prestigious recognition from SALON TODAY,” said Nunes. “Our stylists are dedicated to maintaining a sense of community with guests and collaboration among coworkers. We’re all about hair, and our workspace reflects that energy.”

It has been an exciting, award-winning year for Blo. The salon was named to the SALON TODAY 200 for the fifth consecutive year. America’s 200 top salons are selected by editors at SALON TODAY for their best business practices from among 25,000 salons and spas nationally. Blo winning grand prize in the 2011 “Salons of the Year” and its five-year string in the SALON TODAY 200 are both unprecedented accomplishments among N.C. salons.

The salon’s success is helping to place Raleigh on the fashion and style map. In August 2010, the world’s largest fashion magazine, ELLE, named Blo among the Top 100 Salons in the U.S., as selected by ELLE’s independent researchers. In 2008, Blo was recognized with one of the industry’s highest honors, a Global Salon Business Award.

Blo also is a hot destination for photo shoots which have appeared in beauty publications: Qvest, MODERN SALON, SALON TODAY, American Salon, Passion Color, Passion Wedding, and Passion Men’s style books.

Locally, Blo was named to the Triangle Business Journal’s “35 Best Places to Work” last year, and Independent Weekly readers recently named Blo “Favorite Salon in Wake County.”

2011 Salon of the Year nominees were judged in six design categories: Use of Color, Lighting, Flooring, Efficient Use of Space, Consistency of Design and Overall Aesthetics. This year’s panel of judges included 2010 grand-prize winners Richard Cronk and Dominick Sansevero of Bangz Salon & Wellness Spa, in Montclair, N.J.; Debra Locker, founder of Locker Public Relations; Mindy Terry founder of the Creative Spa Concepts; Lisa Martin, founder of the consulting group Operation Spa; and Laurel Nelson, editor-in-chief of MODERN SALON Magazine.

Located in Raleigh's Brier Creek Commons, Blo is home to a talented design team where egos are passé and replaced with “A Lot of Hot Hair.” Blo offers guests a unique, metropolitan experience that features a bright, energetic environment combined with professionalism from the most highly trained Redken Certified Stylists in the state. The salon receives international recognition as host to numerous magazine photo shoots, as well as for its commitment to stylists’ continuing education and its dedication to community service. Home to the state’s one and only SNIP, SNIP, GIVE: 24-Hour Cut-A-Thon, Blo has donated nearly $50,000 to area charities in recent years.
