Dianna Bowes – she’s a dynamic, savvy, chic baby-boomer chick. The creator of the popular Fabulous@50 trade shows and nascent Edmonton-based Be Fabulous magazine, recently won the YWCA’s Women of Distinction “Turning Point” Award.

“You are never too young – or too old – to shift gears and re-evaluate what you want in life,” says the 53-year-old award recipient. “If your life today is not-so-fabulous, ask yourself ‘why not?’ and then squarely ask that Inner-Dreamer-That-Once-Was ‘Who am I not to shine?”

When Bowes turned the “big 5-0” she decided, at long last, to ditch her doubts and fears and go for her dreams.

She left her pensioned job, and launched Fabulousat50.com, a membership website that celebrates baby-boomer women and creates networking and educational opportunities through her patented trade shows, social media, Meet-Ups and – move over Oprah! – her very own published Be Fabulous magazine, distributed through Sobey’s, Safeway, IGA and other local businesses.

“I’ve always wanted to bring women together and empower them with resources and information to help them be their very best,” says Bowes. “So many of us conceal our greatness, and life becomes a shadow of what it could be; but let yourself be bright and brilliant, and watch your expectations get totally eclipsed!”

Until her forties, “I was sleepwalking, doing what I thought was expected of me, staying under the radar, trying not to draw attention to myself,” writes Bowes of her mid-life turning point in Edmonton author Kelly Falardeau’s book, No Risks ... No Rewards:

“I suppose I thought I was living the picket-fence dream. But I was oh so wrong! A marriage break-up due to addiction issues, a life-threatening surgery and suddenly Ms. White-Picket Fence was a single-mom and full-time bread-winner. It was time to grow up. Little did I know, those responsibilities would become an opportunity to see my life in a new light, to check into who I was and what makes me tick.”

Whether you are a middle-aged professional and wife or stay-at-home divorcée mom, you can become resourceful, connected, adds, Bowes, “... and be as fabulous as you let yourself be.”

About Fabulous@50: Fabulous@50 is an organization founded in 2007 by Dianna Bowes, a fabulous at 50 gal devoted to empowering other middle-aged women to seize life.
