Baltimore based advertising agency Blakeslee announced today it will be working with LED Dental, makers of VELscope Vx, an oral cancer screening device. Blakeslee will provide strategic counsel as-well-as full creative and production services for the Vancouver, BC based company. 14th Floor Solutions of Lake Forest, IL will continue to provide marketing consultation.

“Oral cancer is one of the least talked about cancers. Yet when you look at it from a mortality rate standpoint, it’s a condition that demands the public’s attention,” says Nick Efthimiadis, Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing for LED Dental VELscope. “Early detection is the key. Approximately 8,000 Americans will die from oral cancer this year. The mortality rate for oral cancer is much higher than many other cancers including skin and cervical cancer. In detecting a full range of mucosal abnormalities, including precancerous and cancerous cells, the VELscope Vx puts the power of life-saving technology in the palm of the hand.”

“The mouth is a mirror to the rest of the body and the dentist plays an essential role in helping the patient maintain overall systemic health. With more and more dentists assuming the role of ‘doctor of the mouth’ it makes sense for these professionals to lead the fight against this insidious killer. Ideally, we’d like to see oral cancer screenings become a part of the new standard of care for the dentist,” added Efthimiadis.

The VELscope works by shining a blue-spectrum light into the oral cavity. This light causes the soft tissues of the mouth to naturally fluoresce. Healthy tissues will fluoresce in distinctive patterns. Tissue that is disrupted by trauma or disease will show a disruption in the pattern.

The World Health Organization recognized the VELscope system as one of eight products that addresses global health concerns. It was named one of the Top 100 Products for three consecutive years by Dentistry Today, was recently featured prominently on the nationally syndicated “The Dr. Oz Show” and has played a central role in a number of important studies. While the product is making inroads, Blakeslee hopes to exponentially increase this rate of adoption.

“Currently VELscope is used by over 6,000 dentists worldwide,” said John Pohl of 14th Floor Solutions. “While this number sounds impressive at first pass, it actually represents a tiny percentage of the total number of dentists. Our goal is to help VELscope dramatically grow their visibility and trial over the next five years.”

Trudy Setree, Vice President Account Service for Blakeslee agrees. “We’ve been in the dental professional market for over twenty-two years. We know there’s still a world of untapped opportunity here. Not just in the marketplace, but in the ability to get a VELscope in the hands of dental professionals and start saving more lives. It goes without saying that we’re thrilled with the opportunity to work with such an innovative and up-and-coming new brand.”

Blakeslee is a full-service advertising and PR firm with offices in Baltimore, MD and Park City, UT. Founded in 1931, the agency features a concentration in the medical and dental, resort luxury, high-end real estate, fashion and outdoor apparel industries. Blakeslee has won more than a dozen Telly awards and more than two dozen Addy awards in the past 10 years.
