Travels with Gannon and Wyatt: Botswana, by local authors Patti Wheeler and Keith Hemstreet is a finalist in the 2011, 20th Annual, Colorado Book Awards. The winners will be announced this Friday, June 24 at the Doerr-Hosier Center.
This honor is a great homecoming for the book, which was recently bestowed with a trio of honors at the National Book Expo in New York. “Travels with Gannon and Wyatt: Botswana” was featured there as a Winner of the Nautilus Book Award Silver medal for best Young Adult/Juvenile Fiction and a Winner for Juvenile Fiction from the National Indie Excellence Awards. The book was also selected as a Finalist for best cover design (Children’s/ Young Adult) by the IBPA’s Benjamin Franklin Awards and a Finalist for best book cover design (fiction) from the National Indie Excellence awards.
The journals, photographs and video compiled on the boys’ real-life expeditions provided the foundation for this action-packed educational book series, as well as a television pilot shot in one of their exotic locales, Egypt. This pilot for “Travels with Gannon and Wyatt: Off the Beaten Path” has also been receiving accolades, most recently winning seven Telly Awards. The pilot won 1st Prize in the Children’s Audience category, as well as 2nd Prize in the Cultural, History/Biography, Use of Graphics, Copywriting, Editing and Cinematography categories.
About the Authors
Patti Wheeler’s love of books sparked a desire to travel and see the world. For years, it has been her goal to create a children’s book series that instills the spirit of exploration in young people. Travels with Gannon and Wyatt: Botswana—and future books on the Great Bear Rainforest, Egypt, China and other books—is the realization of her dream. Wheeler is the founder of Claim Stake Productions/Publishing, executive producer and director of the TV pilot Travels with Gannon and Wyatt Off the Beaten Path: Egypt.
Keith Hemstreet studied at Florida State University and earned an MBA from Appalachian State University. He worked as a producer/writer on the television series Playground Earth, an extreme sports variety show broadcast on Fox Sports Net. His writing has been nominated as a finalist for the Pirate’s Alley/Faulkner Award, the New Century Writer’s Award and the Zoetrope Screenwriting Competition.
