Pea Wee Baby™ LLC announced last week the issuance by the US Patent Office of it's first patent on the SwaddleBuddy™ swaddle accessory. Patent number 7,954,187 is for a swaddle accessory that makes a safe, functional, bust-proof swaddle when used in conjunction with any receiving blanket or ready made swaddle. This is the first of four patents pending for a new and innovative series of swaddles for infants.
Pea Wee Baby™ LLC was started by Tamara Earnest. A sleep deprived mother of a houdini baby, she invented a series of unique swaddles that embraces a safer technique of swaddling. The purpose of the SwaddleBuddy™ Series is to eliminate problems associated with the use of available swaddles on the market.
The SwaddleBuddy™ wraps the infant's arms, keeping them comfortably at the sides. The arm wraps attach at the back with hook and loop fasteners. The infant is then wrapped with either an ordinary receiving blanket or a ready made swaddle of the parent's choice. The addition of the SwaddleBuddy™ now turns any ordinary blanket into a safe, functional, bust-proof swaddle.
The American Academy of Pediatrics started recommending placing babies on their backs to sleep in the mid 90′s. The National Institute of Child Health & Human Development started the Back to Sleep Campaign in 1994. Since then, more and more infants are being placed on their backs to sleep and the overall SIDS rate has declined dramatically. However, placing a baby on their back to sleep allows startle and moro reflexes to significantly interrupt a baby's sleep. Keeping the baby's arms comfortably at the sides eliminates this startling awake effect, allowing them longer periods of restorative sleep.
Wrapping the infant's arms also keeps the baby from inadvertently pulling a loose blanket over the face which would put the baby at risk of re-breathing or suffocation.
The versatility of the SwaddleBuddy™ allows parents more flexibility in choosing what to wrap their baby in. They can now easily adjust due to changes in temperature by simply switching between heavier or lighter blankets, eliminating the worry of overheating.

The SwaddleBuddy™, The SwaddleBuddy™ Suit and The SwaddleBuddy™ Sack have other patents pending.
