Animated Knots By Grog, a popular knot tying smart phone application with over 100 knots, celebrated its 1st anniversary on the Apple App Store with the formal announcement of its 2.0 application. Along with 30 new knots, Animated Knots also has new imagery throughout, with rephotographed animations for better quality and consistency, and several other great new features. Over its year on the App Store, Animated Knots has been a consistent top-10 reference app and has been the number one reference app, both in sales and grossing, for several weeks straight.
Beyond additional knots and better photography, Animated Knots has also been updated overall with a new rope and knot terminology section, and a new basics category, which is great for beginners. Several other new features in Animated Knots 2.0 include:
● Retina display compatibility on iPhone 4
● Built-in search feature to quickly find specific knots
● New “flip” button – horizontally mirrors Animations, great for lefties
● Expanded fishing section with several new knots, and detailed usage information
Animated Knots by Grog, created by a 75 year old father and his two adult sons, has been an Apple featured app many times in the past year. Beginning with a prominent banner on the App store home page, the app has frequently appeared in iTunes’ "New & Noteworthy,” “What’s Hot” and "Staff Favorites."
“This all started about 10 years ago as a pastime of mine when I put a few sailing knots on my personal site,” said Animated Knots founder Alan “Grog” Grogono. “People began to find the knots and request others, for sports like fishing and climbing. Soon, the popularity of the knots outgrew my personal site and I created AnimatedKnots.com in 2005. My sons joined the project a few years later and together we developed Animated Knots for the iPhone. Our success on the iPhone has been rewarding, but we are not resting. Our current projects include Android development and a new YouTube channel, which in just over a week has already attracted over 25,000 views.” (as of June 23)
Animated Knots has been popular for years via the website, but the company underwent a period of tremendous growth when the app became available on the iPhone. For the first time, users of Animated Knots could have every knot they could possibly need right in their pocket, wherever they may be – fishing, boating, rock climbing or simply tying a necktie. The application features detailed visuals and graphics showing how to tie – and untie – over 100 knots. The app has proven an invaluable teaching and reference tool for a variety of users, from boaters, sailors and fisherman to climbers and hikers, to campers and scouts, to emergency professionals such as EMS, firefighters and coast guard.
Each knot can be accessed by either an alphabetical list of common knot names or via categories such as those listed above. It is all designed for easy, intuitive navigation. Users control clear and simple step-by-step photo animations of knots tying and untying themselves. Each knot is created through high-quality stop motion photography and users have the ability to pause, or go back to any frame they desire. Beyond instruction and steps, each knot also includes detailed descriptions of correct usage, real life applications, advantages and disadvantages.
“We did our homework in advance, in part through our own use of knots, to determine the knot categories, and assumptions on users and usage,” said founder Martin Grogono. “Along the way, especially this past year, there have been some fun surprises, like the number of firefighters who use Animated Knots in their rescue training. We feel honored that our app is so helpful and valuable, to groups as varied as emergency professionals, weekend fisherman or Girl Scouts on a camping trip.”
The founders will continue to add new features and value to Animated Knots on the iPhone, and an Android version is coming shortly. Currently, the App Store version sells for $4.99 (search “Animated Knots by Grog” on the App Store). More information at http://www.animatedknots.com
