After more than three months of popular protests, Assad has failed to meet even the basic demands of the Syrian people for freedom, justice and dignity; therefore, he must go.
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 22, 2011
The Syrian American Council (SAC), a national grassroots organization of Syrian Americans, today rejected the latest televised speech by Syrian president Bashar Assad as “full of delusions and misinformation.”
Speaking for more than an hour in front of a carefully selected audience at Damascus University earlier today, Assad spoke vaguely about reform and national dialogue but gave no indication that he would implement concrete changes in response to the mass protests of the Syrian people against his regime. Rather than acknowledging the widespread demands for his expulsion, Assad maintained his previous tactic of blaming the unrest on a foreign conspiracy to undermine Syria.

Reacting to Assad’s speech, SAC Chairman Louay Safi said in a statement:
“While the Syrian people are risking their lives protesting for the reforms they have been promised, Bashar Assad delivered another speech full of delusions and misinformation. Assad has shown again that he does not understand or recognize the legitimate demands of the Syrian people. He appears to have decided to keep the corrupt status quo of the Syrian political machine, and shows no intention of leading any transition toward democracy.
“After more than three months of popular protests, Assad has failed to meet even the basic demands of the Syrian people for freedom, justice and dignity; therefore, he must go. Assad, his security apparatus and criminal “Shabbiha” death squad thugs are continuing their crimes against the Syrian people, and they must be held accountable for their crimes.
“We hope that all free people and people of conscience continue to exert pressure on the Syrian regime to stop murdering peaceful demonstrators and innocent civilians. We ask the Obama administration to live up to the American values of freedom and democracy for all mankind by declaring Bashar Assad and his regime illegitimate. We also ask the administration to immediately expel from this country the Syrian regime’s ambassador to the United States.”
Founded in 2005, the Syrian American Council (SAC) has grown in the wake of the brutal Syrian government crackdown on its people when they began demonstrating for freedom and self-determination in March 2011. Its mission is to mobilize Syrian Americans to strengthen civil society in Syria, to promote friendly relations between the Syrian and American peoples, to engage civic and governmental organizations to advance civil liberties and human dignity in Syria, and to encourage international cooperation based on international law and justice.
