Canadian moms and kids have upped the ante on Father’s Day gifts.

Go-Go-Gadget Father’s Day gift! The digital age is in full swing, and no one could be happier than Dad.

Gone are the days of awkward ties and equally awkward thank you hugs. This year, thousands of Canadian fathers unwrapped iPads, global positioning systems, designer watches and other high-tech gadgets, according to trends compiled by Shopbot.

“Classic Father’s Day gifts, such as cologne and shoes, are still popular,” says Shopbot National Sales director Ashley Bienvenu, “but online shoppers preferred iPads, GPS devices and watches by more than 30% in 2011.”

Online comparison shopping is proving its worth to Canadian consumers as a reliable means of purchasing electronics, fashion accessories and other commercial goods at low prices. With product warranties, gift-wrapping and fast delivery available through most online merchants—not to mention price incentives for repeat purchases or purchases over a certain dollar amount—it’s also a convenient and competitive alternative to in-store holiday crowds.

“During the four weeks leading up to Father’s Day, we experienced more than 40% higher traffic versus the same period last year,” says Bienvenu. “And while most gift-givers got an early start to their shopping during the first half of the month, we saw an uptick in sales of more than 15% one week out from the holiday—just in time to ensure delivery by the 19th.”

Blu-ray Disc players, eBook readers and plasma TVs also were among the top 10 product categories purchased online this month suggesting that—finally—Father’s Day gifts and gadgets can be as cool as Dad. is Canada’s premier online bargain shopping engine. Launched in 2004 and specifically tailored to connect discerning Canadian consumers with competitive Canadian retailers, Shopbot utilizes its own award-winning product search technology to surface the most relevant results for customers and the lowest prices. Shopbot’s model of delivering convenience, comparison and value to Canadian households—and quality traffic to its partner merchants—has grown so successful, the company has expanded to offer similar online comparison shopping services in Australia, Brazil, New Zealand and South Africa.
