U.S.-owned Neuro Logic Systems, Inc. (NLS), leader in ruggedized flatpanel displays, today began shipping the world’s first ruggedized, rackmount 30-inch LED display. Designed for military, shipboard and other harsh, demanding environments, the RF-30 incorporates NLS’s proprietary LED backlight system that eliminates 80% of the heat and over 50% of the power consumption of an equivalent 30” CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) display while greatly extending the brightness adjustment range from over 325 cd/m2 down to zero cd/m2. Compared to an equivalent CCFL display, the LED backlighting also makes the display thinner at only 3.8 inches, and lighter at only 24 lbs..
The RF-30 was originally developed for the surveillance airplane in the air-to-ground JSTARS (Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System) program. In this mission-critical situation, it was vital that operators could see clearly and define the characteristics of the images they viewed, while making sure their monitors remained protected and intact.
“Conventional CCFL backlight systems, especially in larger LCD panels, are delicate and easily damaged under the harsh environmental conditions in military applications. Breakage of a single CCFL tube in a conventional multi-tube backlight unit will often render the entire backlight non-operational and the LCD display unusable,” said Steve Sitko, NLS Chief Technology Officer. “In the RF30 the original CCFL backlight unit in the LCD panel has been replaced with a robust, state-of-the-art LED backlight system that features built-in redundancy in the LED architecture. Even with the unlikely loss of a large number of LEDs, the backlight and the display remain fully operational with only minimal loss in the maximum brightness. The RF-30 display can endure higher temperatures and withstand greater vibration and shock, conditions that are commonplace in the control rooms of military aircraft, surface ships and submarines, and many ground based battlefield environments.”
The RF-30 features a high-resolution LCD with native resolution of 2560x1600 (WQXGA), but also supports the common VESA mode 1280x800. Two front panel selectable Dual-Link DVI-D inputs allow the RF-30 to be driven from two independent video sources. The display’s active area is 25.25 inches (641.3 mm) x 15.78 inches (400.8 mm), with a 16:10 aspect ratio, 16.7 million 8-bit color depth and 1000:1 contrast ratio. An optically bonded 3mm strengthened glass front filter with vacuum deposited A/R coatings provides enhanced visual contrast and mechanical protection.
Standard input power is 95-240 VAC, 47-63 Hz via a MIL-STD MS38999 connector. Alternative power options include 28VDC and 48 VDC and 115 VAC at 400 Hz. Power dissipation at maximum brightness is less than 90 watts; standby power is under 5 watts. Operating temperature is -10 to +50˚C and MTBF is 50,000 hours. The RF-30 is certified to MIL-STD-461E and MIL-STD-810.
