Manufacturers increased online job ads for Engineers by 90% in May 2011, reaching a 4-year high. Recruiters on the West Coast placed the most online job ads and may experience challenges with sourcing candidates, according to WANTED Analytics.

Employers and recruiting agencies in the manufacturing industry placed more than 13,000 new online job ads for Engineers during May 2011, according to WANTED Analytics (, the leading source of real-time business intelligence for the talent marketplace. Online job ads for the West Coast saw a 90% increase from May 2010, the most of any US region.

Due to this increased demand for a limited talent supply, employers and recruiters are likely to see challenges with sourcing and recruiting for Engineering positions. San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego all appear in the top five recruiting metropolitan areas, placing a combined total of 1,700 job ads during this one month.

San Jose placed 665 online job ads in May, an 85% year-over-year increase and the most of any metro area. However, this means their talent pool has been reduced from 18 potential candidates in San Jose’s workforce per advertised job in May 2010 to only 9 in May 2011, according to the Hiring Scale™. Recruiting conditions in San Jose fall well below the US average of 40 potential candidates per open position.

The Hiring Scale measures conditions in local job markets by comparing hiring demand and labor supply. The Hiring Scale™ is part of the WANTED Analytics platform that offers business intelligence for the talent marketplace.
