BUILDER, the leading media brand for the home building industry, was honored by the National Association of Real Estate Editors (NAREE) at its 61st Annual Journalism Awards on Friday, June 17. The media brand earned top honors for Best Residential Trade Magazine and Best Web Site Solely Devoted to Residential or Commercial Real Estate and/or Home Design. BUILDER Business Update also garnered second place accolades for Best Newsletter.
BUILDER has been named top residential trade magazine by NAREE in eight of the nine previous years. This year, judges commented that the magazine “serves its readers with a solid editorial mix of upbeat success stories, trend analysis, new building techniques, and new product information.”
BUILDER’S website, http://www.BuilderOnline.com, received top honors for the first time this year. Judges noted that the site “has an excellent front page that uses three-column design as a guide to informative stories.”
“We are grateful to receive recognition for both our print and online journalism in the same year,” said Boyce Thompson, BUILDER’s editorial director. “It’s been a major struggle to continue meeting our high magazine journalism standards, even as our writers, editors, and artists devoted more time and resources to our website, e-newsletters, video, and other new media.”
Judges also lauded BUILDER Business Update, saying it provides subscribers with “well targeted stories and lively videos; it has a clean design, the information is easily assessed, and it has useful articles for general building industry employees, who are targeted by this publication.”
NAREE’s awards program recognizes excellence in reporting, writing and editing stories about residential and commercial real estate. All award winners were selected by a panel of expert judges from the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Professor Patrick S. Washburn, a former news reporter and editor, chaired the panel of jurors. A record number of entries from professional journalists across the U.S. were received this year. Prizes, totaling $8,000, were awarded in 25 different categories.
