Stephen T. Onesti, M.D., F.A.C.S., a nationally known neurosurgeon specializing in the spine, has joined Neurological Surgery, P.C. With offices throughout Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties, New York, Neurological Surgery, P.C. Dr. Onesti served as Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Brooklyn’s SUNY Downstate Health Sciences Center from 2003 until earlier this year, and remains a Professor of Neurosurgery at SUNY Downstate.

One of the largest and most highly specialized private practices in greater New York, Neurological Surgery, P.C. has 30 affiliated physicians including 16 neurosurgeons representing a range of brain and spinal surgery sub-specialties. Other specialties and sub-specialties represented in the practice include interventional neuroradiology, neuro-oncology, neuro-ophthalmology, epileptology (epilepsy neurology), pain management, critical care neurology and neurophysiology, as well as the clinical psychology specialty of neuropsychology.

Dr. Onesti specializes in surgery of the spine. He has published more than 70 peer review journal articles, book chapters and abstracts on spinal surgery and related topics, and has done numerous presentations at national and regional medical meetings. He co-edited a book on degenerative disc disease of the cervical spine.

Dr. Onesti is Immediate Past President of the New York State Neurosurgical Society and a past member of the board of directors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Prior to his appointment at SUNY Downstate, Dr. Onesti was an attending neurosurgeon at Montefiore Medical Center and an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Onesti received his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard College and his medical degree, cum laude, from Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center/Neurological Institute of New York.

Dr. Onesti is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.). His professional memberships include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the New York State Neurosurgical Society. Among many honors, Dr. Onesti was selected as a New York Super Doctor in 2011; Castle Connolly Top Doctor: New York Metro Area in 2010; and a Best Doctor in America, 2009-2010.
