Company Wants Women to Know Their Numbers And Importance of Practicing A Healthy Lifestyle

In its effort to promote good health and living lifestyle to women worldwide, Lady of America Fitness Corporation wants to make sure you know your numbers and the importance of practicing a healthy lifestyle. Knowing your body’s numbers — blood pressure, waist size, weight, cholesterol and fasting blood sugar level — is the key to good health, and it’s the first step to really taking charge of your life.

According to the American Heart Association, high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) killed 56,561 people in 2006. Today, approximately 74.5 million American adults live with high blood pressure. This disease can cause many medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and stroke, which can strike suddenly.

When getting your blood pressure taken, it’s important to pay attention to the top number – the systolic pressure, which indicates the pressure when the heart beats while pumping blood. For women, a systolic reading above 140 is considered too high. In a recent Dr. Oz program, Dr. Oz urged women to aim for a blood pressure reading of 115/75.

Another number to watch is waist size. Ideally, a woman’s waist should be no more than 32.5 inches. If the waist is larger, the risk of dying prematurely nearly doubles thanks to belly fat, which sends out a toxic stream of chemicals impacting the whole body. In addition, a waist size of more than 35 inches in women can greatly increase the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and more.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one out of three Americans are obese and two out of every three are overweight. Being overweight can lead to a number of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, GERD, gout, hypertension and even cancer.

What's the best way to determine a healthy weight? BMI (body mass index) provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems. As well, a height/weight chart provides a healthy range in regard to weight. The average American woman stands at 5’4. According to the height/weight chart, the ideal weight is between 108 - 132 pounds. Members of Lady of America can find out their BMI and ideal weight at their local Lady of America fitness club.

High cholesterol is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The HDL, or healthy cholesterol, should be 50 or better; the LDL, the unhealthy cholesterol, should be under 100. If your numbers do not fall in this range, Lady of America urges you to discuss strategies for lowering your LDL and increasing your HDL with your doctor.

The last number women need to know is their fasting blood sugar. This test measures the risk for pre-diabetes and diabetes, a chronic disease that can lead to blindness, cardiac disease, kidney failure, nerve problems and an impaired immune system. This test must be taken after fasting for at least 8 hours –that means no food or drink, other than water. According to the American Diabetes Association, women want a result of less than 100 mg/dL; a fasting blood sugar number above 100 is considered pre-diabetic.

To do its part toward better fitness and living a better lifestyle, Lady of America produces fitness videos for and sponsors a variety of fitness programs and challenges throughout the year. In addition, the company partners with fitness and healthy lifestyle companies to promote well-being.
