The “MedFolio Cares” program will offer in-home device installation and tutorials to assist patients in fully utilizing the MedFolio Pillbox and its many features.

MedFolio, LLC announced today that customers local to San Francisco and the Greater Bay Area can now request installation services and monthly medication adherence visits through the MedFolio Cares program. The MedFolio Pillbox, a medication management device, helps patients with more varied and complex medication regimens adhere to their dosage schedule properly. The MedFolio Pillbox uses software to store medication information, integrating with the patient’s computer and cell phone to provide reminder alerts. Because some users may be unfamiliar with using data entry software, MedFolio is excited to offer visits by a licensed pharmacist to assist patients and their families in installing the MedFolio Pillbox and filling the pillboxes on a monthly basis in the comfort of their home. The MedFolio Cares program will be initiated in Northern California and the company hopes to offer the service in other communities in the future.

Julie Fulmer-Mason, President of MedFolio, received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of California San Francisco in 1998. Having worked extensively with the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, Fulmer-Mason repeatedly witnessed the need for a more effective medication management system, leading to the development of the MedFolio Pillbox. Understanding that patients and families might be intimidated by such a powerful tool, MedFolio realizes the importance of educating the public about medication adherence. Having already produced video tutorials for the setup, installation and usage of the device (available on the company’s website), MedFolio hopes that those patients needing further reassurance that the MedFolio Pillbox can integrate into their own lifestyle will contact the company about the MedFolio Cares program.

“This program reassures families and health care providers that the medications taken at home make sense and that pillboxes are filled accurately,” notes Fulmer-Mason. “In the home environment, there is a benefit to the health care industry of a pharmacist’s watchful eye to make sure everything is right on the medication front. This means that medications are being taken on a regular basis, refills are ordered on time, and that there are no potential drug interactions, unwanted side effects or duplication of therapy. These problems are prevalent in society today, especially when patients are seeing multiple doctors in multiple facilities, and utilizing the services of multiple pharmacies.”

Following each MedFolio Cares visit, observations and recommendations will be made to caregivers, family members, and healthcare providers. By utilizing the MedFolio Pillbox and the MedFolio Cares program, patients and caregivers are promoting independence at home with the goal of reducing health care resource utilization, such as ER visits, hospital stays, or new admissions to assisted living facilities due to medication non-adherence.

The cost of the in-home visit service is dependent on the distance travelled and the complexity of the particular medication schedule. The MedFolio Cares program will work with individual families to determine if their insurance plans will provide reimbursement for the visits.
