Lake Lanier Island Resort, one of Georgia’s most visited lakeside destinations, has partnered with Walkingspree, a leading technology-driven activity-based corporate wellness company, to provide guests the opportunity to experience a fitness routine that can motivate and change their lives and those of their employees.

Concerned about the health of his employees and looking for a way to help contain health care costs, Lake Lanier Island Resorts CEO Virgil Williams chose the Walkingspree USB-pedometer based walking program for his employees in 2010. Williams was so impressed with the program’s results – which included reduced absenteeism, increased morale, and augmented sense of team spirit among his staff – that he wanted to offer it to his corporate retreat clients.

“The goal of this unique program is to help educate and motivate as well as set and reach health and wellness goals,” says Williams, who wears his pedometer every day and is known to offer up step challenges at the beginning of staff meetings.

Williams was inspired to create the Legacy Wellness Program at Lake Lanier Islands Resort to encourage wellness among employees and guests. Both Williams and his wife are cancer survivors and their personal experiences have made them very attuned to the importance of healthy living.

Legacy Wellness’ innovative Walkingspree iWalk program, incorporates the power of social networking and a USB-pedometer to deliver results and fun, and may very well lead to lower health benefit costs across the board. One employee who walks regularly can cut as much as $3,000 a year from benefits costs. And just walking 30 minutes a day can reduce risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer.

“Experiencing the program first hand gets executives excited and shows the power of our corporate wellness program. It is fun, it is contagious, but in a good way,” said Hiran Perera, CEO of Walkingspree. “Our numbers provide that our program works. Putting it into the hands of decision makers and letting them test drive the program is an excellent way to experience the program.”

Recent participant surveys reported that more than 72 percent said pedometer walking had become a permanent lifestyle change, more than 80 percent said the program increase camaraderie with fellow employees, and 78 percent said morale toward their employer increased. That is definitely a take away strategy for any corporate retreat.
