Scotiabank vice president, Enterprise Security Service, and member,(ISC)² North American Advisory Board (NAAB), Greg Thompson, CISSP, was named “Financial Services CSO of the Year” by SC Magazine Awards Canada at the SC Congress Canada 2011 held June 14-15, 2011 in Toronto, Ontario. The awards program, organized to honor the achievements of companies and IT security professionals striving to safeguard businesses, their customers and critical data in Canada, received more than 650 nominations for 31 categories.

Thompson was chosen by a panel of readers who represent the circulation of SC Magazine against the criteria of relevant achievements for the past year, including the spearheading of any stellar programs, and any positive and lasting effects – corporate-wide or otherwise – resulting from his work with Scotiabank and his contributions to the professional and local community through the (ISC)2 NAAB, the (ISC)² NAAB Executive Writers Bureau (EWB) and the (ISC)² Safe and Secure Online program. The judges were also looking beyond the company programs at activities that exemplify and distinguished Thompson from the other candidates.

“It is an honor to be recognized in this way by SC Magazine’s readers,” said Thompson. “The award exemplifies the Scotiabank information security team’s commitment to delivering our company, and especially our customers, a safe banking environment.”

Thompson was also instrumental in helping launch the (ISC)² Safe and Secure Online program in Canada. Safe and Secure Online is designed for children ages 11-14 and tackles hot-button cyber issues affecting kids today, such as cyber-bullying, online reputation, social networking, “sexting”, viral e-mail, identity theft, and more. The program addresses the gap in security advice that exists in children’s safety outreach efforts, using compelling materials for the classroom developed by former school teachers and presented by (ISC)²-certified information security professionals. At the Safe and Secure Online launch last month, six (ISC)² member volunteers with Scotiabank reached more than 400 children in Toronto-area schools. The program is offered to any school in the country free of charge.

“One of the biggest challenges facing our children who are computer users is how to protect themselves against Internet threats that are becoming more and more sophisticated,” said Thompson. “With Scotiabank’s support, our security team and (ISC)² members across the country can volunteer their professional expertise and skills to help our children make wise choices while using the Internet.”

As a member of the (ISC)2 NAAB Executive Writers Bureau, Thompson volunteers to collaborate on and write articles pertaining to a variety of information security topics in assisting to sharpen information security professionals and providing a knowledge base for the industry.
