Indoor Gardening Pioneer Sows Seeds For Aggressive Growth

A retailer in a very specialized industry that helps his customers to create indoor "grow-rooms" for aggressive gardening is expanding his business. Business is growing like crazy in a bad economy.

With the support of a recent boom in the indoor gardening industry, retailer Jay Lawrence of Growco Indoor Garden Supply in Grand Rapids, Michigan is expanding his business with a new 16,000 sq ft distribution warehouse, which will supply a planned chain of "grow-shops" in the Midwest. Mr. Lawrence started Growco Indoor Garden Supply 12 years ago, filling a need for indoor horticultural equipment for his customers. "I was a hobbyist myself, and I had a hard time getting supplies, and I decided to fill that need. We started at a time when the internet was just getting popular. Our sales have almost doubled every year since I started the business, and last year they even went beyond that." Growco has maintained the website http://www.4hydroponics.com from the day he first opened his retail store in 1999.

Jay says that "We have a huge selection of plant lighting, hydroponics systems, and organic fertilizers and pest controls." Jay has plans to open 3 additional retail stores within the next year, expanding into areas that don't currently have indoor gardening stores to support their hobby needs. "Our plans are to open larger retail stores with class rooms, and more display space, where we can help to educate and supply the community with horticultural products at reasonable prices. We've done well on the internet from the beginning, and now we're going to bring our supplies directly to our customers beyond the one retail store."

Growco currently has a single retail store located in Grand Rapids, Mi. at 1042 Michigan St, and is now operating their new distribution warehouse about a mile away at 2055 Oak Industrial Dr. NE. Growco has 16 full time employees, and will be adding to their sales staff as they add new retail stores. "Each store will need 6 to 8 full time employees, so I'm excited to bring in new people during this time when it's so hard to get a job out there."
